I was looking for the English Translation of the lyrics to Taip Gera by Deivis. My cousin who is a genealogy buff sent me a powerpoint presentation of some scenes in Lithuania and the song sounds beautiful, but we have no idea what the English translation is of it since neither of us speaks Lithuanian although our Grandmother was native Lithuanian and spoke very little English.
Found the lyrics online but no translation in English...thanks for any help you can provide:

Any ideas about travel agencies that hone in on some outstanding or off the wall tourist activities? I visited such web sites as  (gotorussia.com, russia-travel.com, dovisit.com, russia.com, etc.), they really offer such tours but I’m not sure they are reliable enough…

famous preachers of the 17th century Grand Duchy of Lithuania who wrote sermons)... In Lithuania still exist people having Vitunskis or even more popular Vitunskas surname...

I'm a quarter Lithuanian, and I'm in love with the culture. Growing up, my great grandparents made dishes like kougali and spoke fluently in Lithuanian. I WOULD LOVE TO LEARN, and am in the process of teaching myself.
Can anyone tell me if kougali is a popular dish in Lithuania, and maybe the origin of the name Witunskis? Lithuanian? Polish? Can't find anything on it without spending money. I'd just like to know how deeply rooted my family is. I'd hate to find out NOW that I'm not as Lithuanian as I thought...Aciu!

I have a studio flat in London and funny enough my neighbours are Lithanian. They taught me how to say maybug which is 'Karkvarbalis'. Cute hey??
Anyhow, the great Lithanian poets are many, but I find it hard to find the young contemporary writers, so that I can learn to understand fast and furiously. I know I have to get to know the alphabet first.
Rasa means Rose ...correct? What on earth does Pupa mean? I found a childs poem about this.
Hope you can help me get started. I don't know how the computer does the phonetic symbols yet. Slowly byt surely.

"KUMA" - pronounciation is like it is written [K-U:-M-A] (last A as it is in "cut")... but the main meaning is is GodMather...
Also she could be called BOBUTE - [B-O:-B-U-T-E:] (U - short U) or MOCIUTE (but that is difficult word to pronounce)

I forgot to mention that I owe my life to the Lithuanian language. My father spoke it fluently, and he was sent to Germany instead of Vietnam as a result. The entire rest of his company died in Vietnam, but he did not. He didn't know he was going to Germany until the day before they were all deployed.

I grew up in a Lithuanian American community and learned some of the language from my maternal grandparents (Kripaitis) and some from the Roman Catholic grammar school I attended.

My three sons are well aware of my Lithuanian heritage (we fly the flag on independence day and I sing the national anthem) and they all want to know more about the country, its customs and traditions.

My middle son is getting married in late August. He has asked me to deliver a short speech in Lithuanian (a folktale, a history vignette or a poem) to the assembled guests. Although my pronunciation is fairly good, my vocabulary is somewhat limited (words and phrases pop into my head from time to time).

If you can suggest a short piece, in both Lithuanian and its English translation, I would be indebted to you.

The name of mine great-grandmother Damute seems that he is diminutive of Domicele. The lituanos names had been modified here in Brazil due to information at the time of immigration. I asked for birth certificate of it to www.archyvai.lt ,for intermedio of the lituano Consulate of Brazil.

My grandmother immigrated for Brazil in the approach period of 1918~1925, brought for another lituana family of which we do not know the name, but was abandoned the proper luck in a hotel in the city of Joaquin Tavora - Paranį, having been left without documents and money, only with the clothes that dressed, some familiar photos and a bible that kept affectionately ties its death in 21 of March of 1991.
After the abandonment in the hotel, my grandmother was helped and created for the German family, proprietor of the hotel where she was abandoned, ties its marriage.
One does not know because of its immigration, not having been folloied for no familiar one. It said to be the new son of its parents and that the Lituania was in war, having witnessed you vary people deceased during its trip.
Was married Jose Manoel Ruiz Martinez (descending of Spaniard) in 19 of March of 1928 in the city of Joaquin Tavora - Paranį - Brazil, with who had 09 children.

your grandmothers surname must be Miliauskaite (not Milianskaite)it is a common surname in Lithuania, good luck with your search.
As for the name Petronele is the original and Petruse and all the rest diminutives.
I suggest you look in the archives of the churches in Kalvarija district. tey have the birth certificates and might know some history of relative families. The sooner the better!

I have a question. I am neither Lithuanian nor do I speak Lithuanian. I just recently took interest in learning the language and about the country and its people. I have been actively "studying" words and phrases but still mix up the contextual meaning of words.
I've written a short, 2 page prose for a friend, whom is a native Lithuanian, I would like to know if it is possible to get help translating it from English to Lithuanian. Any help would be appreciated.

The formal way:

The informal way:

Some expressions are not usual in lithuanian. Literally it's translated something like this:
"Hello. I just wanted to wish you happy New Year. I hope 2005 will bring you much health and much joy. This is my wish for you. Hold yourself. Your friend for the whole life, DG"

You can say "As taves TAIP ilgiuosi!". As is a personal pronoun which means I. It can be left out in Lithuanian and you can also say "TAIP taves ilgiuosi" or "TAIP ilgiuosi taves". Even "Taves TAIP ilgiuosi" is gramatically correct. Good luck! :)

Well, the best way of learning a language is to go to the country. Or you should only ask your girlfriend to teach you.
However, I don't know any worth visiting lithuanian language teaching websites. The only course I know (asap there are a few, though) is Pimsleur's Lithuanian (http://www.pimsleurapproach.com/learn-lithuanian.asp - you can buy it here or you could search for a cheaper version online or get it from friends) but it's VERY small, too small to learn something but the 'Hello' and 'Goodbye' words. By the way, I tried pisleut lithuanian and foud it to be kind of helpfull
if you don't know any language, it at least helps you with pronounciation. Of course you will not learn the language after you listen to these 5 tapes, but it's a start. They don't have a follow up program.
