I WANT LITHUANIAN WIFE!

A few years back, when I was single I attended a small gathering of Lithuanian Americans. I would guess there were about 200 people in attendance. There, I had just met a recent immigrant from Lithuania. The music was very loud of course and the hall was crowded. We found room to stand, but it was directly in front of the speakers and facing the packed seating area. We actually had to shout to each other to overcome the volume. After a few minutes, my new found aquaintance Asked If I were married.
"No" I replied.
"But there are so many beautiful girls in America!"
Jokingly I replied in Lithuanian,
"I don't want an American woman, I WANT A LITHUANIAN WIFE!"

At the exact same time that I finished the last five, but very significant words.... the music stopped and I had shouted "I want a Lithuanian Wife", in the Lithuanian Language for all to hear. Somewhat embarrassing! And my new friend found it amusing also. During the course of the evening I was approached by the "Little, Old, Lithuanian Ladies Match-Making League" at least 5 or six times. Each very polite, but bearing photo's or names and addresses of young Lithuanian whomen who in their opinion needed to find a man like me!

Long after this event I met from time to time with my new aquaintance. I was happily un-married and getting married was the last on the list of my priorities. One day I recieved a call from Algis. After the usual greetings his intentions were made quite clear. "Mykolai! I vant jus to meet nice nice girl... she is Lietuve!" Bet only for friend! O.K.?

I  smelled another match-making episode in the works and eventually agreed to meet this girl, so long as all parties undersood that I was not looking for a relationship other than friendship. I learned later that she had told him the same.

Well, without going into further details, we fell in love and are now happily married for almost three years! Can't convince me that the spirits weren't involved in this case!
